Jay North stepped back from the car he was working on and dropped his dust mask to see if he was making any progress. So far, he’d taken off the front bumper, done his best to bash out the dent and filled the worst of it, and sanded it smooth. With a decent respray, the job was virtually done. Not too bad. But Jay North still wasn’t happy. The face of the moody detective in the blue blazer and chino trousers kept coming to mind, like the first hints of a migraine. An encounter like that was enough to ruin anyone’s day. And worse, North knew it wasn’t the last he’d seen of the man. The unwanted car at the back of the workshop would see to that. He glanced at the Scorpio swamped in the tarpaulin and tried to ignore it. Where was Trev with his bloody tea? Trev was taking his sweet old time. Which made Jay suspicious that Trev was knocking up another spliff. But smoking puff at work had to stop. Enough was enough. Sod Trev. If he didn’t like it, Jay would get shot of him. He’d get in an apprentice instead and save himself a few quid to boot. Yeah. Now that wasn’t a bad idea, was it? But in the meantime, where was his tea…? North stepped away from the car he was working on and found Trevor standing idly at the back of the workshop in front of the Scorpio. He watched as Trevor tugged at the tarp, exposing the shattered windscreen, and the deep double-dent in the bonnet – all too obviously made from the impact of a human body. If the case reached court, and the magistrate was shown a photograph of the damage Jay North knew pleas of ignorance would be laughed out of court.

“Pull that tarp back down now,” snapped North.

Trev nearly jumped a half foot into the air in shock. He let go of the tarp, twisted round, and spilled a slosh of tea from the mug in his hand. For an instant he looked at North with wide eyes before regaining his composure.

“What’s the matter? I just wanted a look.”

“I don’t want to see it anymore. I wish it was gone,” said North. “We shouldn’t have taken it on.”

“Yeah?” said Trev with a smirk. “Well you didn’t seem too bothered about that this morning. Not when the geezer started talking cash.”

“You know what, Trev? Sometimes you can be really bloody annoying.”

Trevor grinned. “Chill out, Jay. Here. Want your tea?”

Trevor offered him the half-spilled mug of tea as the workshop door’s rusty hinges creaked open. The noise made Jay North experience a painful sense of déjà vu. Jay turned towards the door expecting to see the moody cop’s return. It wasn’t him. But any relief he might have felt didn’t last long as another moody face stepped across the threshold.

The newcomer stepped in and his bulk blocked out the light from outside. The man wore his hair in short French crop with too much shiny wax plastered on it.
